LOS ANGELES (April 27, 2015): Peace Over Violence is commemorating the 16th annual Denim Day at the GUESS, Inc.? headquarters in downtown Los Angeles. Supporters are encouraged to take a stand against rape, sexual assault and dating violence on Wednesday, April 29, 2015 by wearing jeans on this specific date to raise awareness.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and the campaign recalls an Italian court case that sparked international outrage when the justices overturned a rape conviction because the victim wore tight jeans. The justices felt that because the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped her attacker remove them, thus implying consent.

“What began as a simple act of protest – wearing jeans to challenge the overturning of a rape conviction in support of a survivor in Italy – has become one of our most visible public education campaigns,” said Patti Giggans, Executive Director of Peace Over Violence. “Wear your jeans on April 29 and stand with us as to raise awareness about rape and to support survivors”

Global lifestyle brand GUESS?, Inc. and the GUESS Foundation have signed on for the second year as the official fashion sponsor of Denim Day. In honor of Denim Day 2015, the GUESS Foundation will donate $2 for every pair of jeans and select accessories sold including a watch, jewelry, shoes, fragrance, handbag and eyewear to Peace Over Violence happening now through, Wednesday, April 29th. With the slogan, There is No Excuse and Never an Invitation to Rape,” Denim Day is marked annually with events around the US., including rallies on college campuses and military bases. In the United States this year, events will be held in Los Angeles, New York City, Sacramento and Detroit.

In Los Angeles, Aloe Blacc and Maya Jupiter, the celebrity spokespeople for Denim Day, will perform at a morning rally at the GUESS?, Inc. headquarters. Maya Jupiter will perform her brand new song “Never Said Yes” (Artivist Entertainment) a song that directly addresses affirmative consent, often ignored in rape discussions. It is inspired by the film The Hunting Ground and Peace Over Violence’s message of ending sexual violence and supporting survivors. The song is available as a free download at bit.ly/neversaidyes from today to May 8th to support Sexual Violence Awareness Month and Denim Day. A lyric video for “Never Said Yes” is available on YouTube: Maya Jupiter “Never Said Yes” Lyric Video

Advocates, educators, students, community members, college students, elected officials, business leaders in Los Angeles and throughout the U.S. took part in the Denim Day movement in the weeks leading up to April 29th. Already, more than five million supporters from schools, clubs, corporations and government agencies have signed up to wear jeans this year in recognition of Denim Day.
