Los Angeles, CA (July 29, 2014): The GRAMMY®-winning Los Angeles-based band Quetzal released its 6th studio album today, through new independent record label Artivist Entertainment, just days after their incredibly successful 20-Year Anniversary concert celebration at Grand Performances in Downtown L.A. This is the band’s first concept album that features acoustic songs about urban animals. “We talk about squirrels in relations to hoarders, coyotes in relation to gentrification, and the encroachment of civilized urban sprawl. This album talks about the beauty we have, even as some see us as being disenfranchised,” said band lead-singer Martha Gonzalez in a recent interview with LA Weekly. The concept began with the idea to assign all band members to write acoustic songs about urban animals. “The traditional music we’re influenced by often focuses on animals,” says band founder Quetzal Flores. “They become these themes by which people create poetry. They’re usually metaphors for their own lives or some type of struggle.” The result was an 11-track collection of odes to “animales,” aptly titled Quetzanimales, where songs come to life through the sounds of funky afro-Latin beats, bluesy melodies, and country inflected soulful ballads.

Quetzal is the collaborative project of Quetzal Flores (guitar), Martha González (lead vocals, percussion), Tylana Enomoto (violin), Juan Pérez (bass), Peter Jacobson (cello), and Alberto Lopez (percussion). The musical ensemble is influenced by an East LA rock scene that includes bands like Los Lobos, Ozomatli, and La Santa Cecilia. Quetzal’s lyrics are often politically charged and based on a vision of social activism and community empowerment.

Artivist Entertianment is an organization founded by platinum recording artist Aloe Blacc, Maya Jupiter, Quetzal Flores, Veronica Gonzalez and Alberto Lopez, dedicated to supporting and creating music and art for positive social change.

Los Ángeles, CA (29 de julio, 2014): El grupo musical Chicano del Este de Los Ángeles llamado Quetzal hoy lanza al mercado su nuevo disco, días después de haber celebrado su 20 aniversario en grande con un concierto gratis en Grand Performances en California Plaza del centro de Los Ángeles. Quetzal fue ganador de un premio GRAMMY® en 2013 por su último álbum titulado Imaginaries y hoy sale su nuevo álbum Quetzanimales bajo el nuevo sello disquero Artivist Entertainment, y será su primer disco conceptual. El concepto nació cuando el grupo decidió que cada integrante se dedicaría a escribir una canción acústica dedicada a un animal urbano. “La idea era ver el mundo a través de sus ojos, aprender sobre la manera en que se relacionan entre si y analizar sus condiciones de supervivencia” dijo la cantante Martha Gonzalez en una entrevista con el periódico Hoy Los Ángeles. “En la música tradicional que influencia nuestra música a seguido hablan de animales”, dice Quetzal Flores, fundador del grupo. “Se convierten en la inspiración de temas que personas usan en poemas y usualmente son metáforas para describir sus propias vidas o sus luchas.” El resultado fue una colección de 11 temas o odas a los animales aptamente titulada Quetzanimales, que cobran vida a través de los sonidos de ritmos basados en cumbia, melodías de blues y baladas sentimentales flexivas por la música country.

Quetzal es el proyecto colaborativo de Quetzal Flores (guitarra), Martha González (voz, percusión), Tylana Enomoto (violín), Juan Pérez (bajo), Peter Jacobson (violonchelo) y Alberto López (percusión). El conjunto musical está influenciado por una escena roquera del este de Los Ángeles que incluye artistas reconocidos como Los Lobos, Ozomatli, y La Santa Cecilia. Su visión política se basa en el activismo social y el empoderamiento de la comunidad.
